Manufacturing Academic Artifacts Into Useful Products
Abstract
Research and teaching produce software alongside papers. These tools are built to support the work and could serve people well beyond it. AI agents now make such prototypes fast to build. A fast prototype is not a dependable product. Most academic tools stay tied to the projects and people who made them. Artifactured takes selected academic artifacts past the prototype and manufactures them into accessible, maintained products. Its first pilot manufactures MDQ Cloud from MDQ Core, an open-source presentation system in which a deck is one plain Markdown file with one idea per slide, formatted dependably in the spirit of LaTeX so that authors, human or agent, work on content rather than layout. MDQ stands for Markdown Decks & Quizzes. MDQ Core stays open. MDQ Cloud, now in private beta, adds hosted authoring, checks on every edit and workspaces for teams. The pilot tests whether an academic tool can become a supported offering while keeping its inspectable source and open foundation. Results are forthcoming.
1 Introduction
Artifactured is an independent Singapore company developing useful artifacts from research, teaching and professional practice into maintained products. An artifact might begin as a script that makes an analysis possible, a tool built for a class, or a prototype that tests a new way of working. Its first purpose is to help someone do the work. Our interest is in what it could become for others.
Our mission is to give selected artifacts a life beyond their original setting. That means understanding who needs them, making them usable outside the creator’s own workflow, and taking responsibility for deployment, maintenance and support. We bring product engineering to the work already embodied in the artifact. The aim is a dependable product that keeps its useful foundations while becoming accessible to a wider audience.
Our approach starts with the people and context behind an artifact. Product development should retain contributor credit, respect applicable licences and permissions, and keep the source of the work clear. We carry useful ideas into everyday use and support them for the people who depend on them.
The name Artifactured brings together artifact and manufactured. The rust colored part represents raw artifacts, the working tools and prototypes from which a product begins. Rust evokes material with a history, carrying the effort and knowledge of its makers. The green-teal part represents that material developed into a useful, maintained product.
Our Foundation A expresses this mission in two parts. Its rust colored crossbar and feet support the teal upper frame, with a visible gap showing how the pieces are assembled. The finished product is built on the original artifact, not detached from it. The wordmark carries the same idea from the rust colored Artifact into the green-teal ured, echoing manufactured.
